The Happy Man Tree - upcoming screenings

Wildscreen Festival 2024, Bristol, October 14-18

All of us who were involved in the campaign to save the Happy Man Tree are thrilled that the film has been selected for the world-renowned Wildscreen wildlife film festival and that our story will sit alongside other stories of human efforts to save nature in places across the globe.  What an honour!

16 May 2023 - Castle Cinema, Homerton, London

The Happy Man Tree film was screened at the beautiful Castle Cinema, Homerton, as part of the Urban Tree Festival 2023. It was a great turn out and the screening triggered a good discussion about the role - and rights - of existing nature in urban environments. As ever, the youngest person in the room asked the most pertinent questions, a ten-year-old girl: "why did the Council let the builders to fell the tree?"

I love how the Urban Tree Festival brings together people from different disciplines and organisations across the UK to celebrate trees and/or bemoan their plight.

Past screenings

8 June 2023 - Copenhagen Architecture Festival

The Happy Man Tree film has had another outing, this time at the Copenhagen Architecture Film Festival (CAFx) and it was certainly in very good company.  It was screened as part of the "Trees Are Re-enchanted" event which brought together pioneering architects, including German landscape architect, Nivah Samuel and Ancher Hastrup, from COBE, the company responsible for transforming rundown Jernbaynbayen (The Railway District) in Copenhagen from a derelict industrial zone into a liveable, green neighbourhood. Also present was writer and architect Ulla Lunn, author of the critically acclaimed book, "E.g." (2020), and the amazing Danish architect duo, Studio Tideland (who created the above image) who use 3D scanning technology to chart biological decomposition in thousand-year-old oak trees - fascinating!

"What significance do the trees have for biotopes, adaptation and belonging? An evening about the role of trees in natural crises, everyday life and cultural history?"

I couldn't attend but I really hope I can attend next year's festival as it's a really interesting festival with lots of focus on community and ecology. Their website is well worth checking out:  https://www.cafx.dk/

30th March 2024 - Vietnam International Nature Film Festival

The Happy Man Tree film was selected by the British Council for screening at the 2nd International Nature Film Festival in Hanoi. There were two screenings of the film, one at Lotte Cinema, Thang Long and one at the British University and each screening was attended by around 150 people. Visit their Facebook page for more information

Festival programmer, Nguyen Ha, kindly sent me a report on how the screening went: "Last week The Happy Man Tree was shown at Lotte Cinema Thang Long and British University Vietnam. I and Donna attended the screening at Lotte Cinema and the theatre was almost full – the coordinator of the event even had to close the registration form due to over registration".

5th April 2024 - Mammoth A Climate Action Cinema, Nottingham

For Intervention No.3 NoticeThisTree went to Mammoth - A Climate Action Cinema in Nottingham, a small but hugely influential cinema which self-describes as "A hub for sharing ideas about how we can all contribute towards a better, fairer, and greener future - focused around film".

People walked from trees to the cinema where they connected and shared stories of trees. They also participated in an artist-led workshop facilitated by Raffa Baldo, an artist as well as programmer at Mammoth cinema, and contributed to the ever-growing Mycelium Mundus banner, before watching the Happy Man Tree film. After the screening we all reflected on the question 'what now'? It was a really lovely venue and the audience were really engaged in the fim and the activities around it.

14th May 2024 - Plymouth Arts Cinema

Intervention No.4 took place at the Plymouth Arts Cinema, on 14th May as part of Plymouth's Urban Tree Festival 2024 organised by Plymouth Tree People

People walked from local trees and we lamented the loss of so many trees in Plymouth city centre last year - a disastrous episode which was bravely highlighted by the actions of STRAW - visit their website to find about more about their campaigning work STRAW. We also made art together, worked on our collaborative Mycelial Mundus Tapestry, and drank wine! The creative input from people we collaborated with was so beautiful. It was a such a memorable experience. Some strong connections were made.
